Easter Egg Hunt ESL Reading Activity

The last day before spring break and Easter I had an Easter egg hunt for my ESL 1 class. It was a fun way for the students to practice their reading, review school places, learn about Easter, and talk about what they know about Easter.

The picture above shows a blue basket of eggs which are filled with clues to different locations around school. The orange basket with Easter grass is filled with candy. I placed the eggs with clues all around school, and each clue led to a different egg in a different location. Some clues written on slips of paper looked like the following:

  • I am next to the window.

  • I am next to the stairs.

  • I am next to the school entrance.

  • I am next to the auditorium.

  • I am next to the steps.

  • I am next to the male bathroom.

  • I am next to the gym entrance.

  • I am next to the library doors.

  • I am next to the flagpole outside.

The clues finally lead to the very last clue “I am next to the flagpole outside.” The students will finally find the Easter basket next to the flagpole. Each time an egg with a clue is found, the student who discovers the egg opens the egg and proceeds to read the clue. The clue is then passed around the circle for each student to read the clue. Oftentimes students who have stronger reading skills read the clue first while students who struggle with reading read the clue toward the end.

With the time remaining in class, we discuss what the students know about Easter and what they plan on doing during Easter.
