Elect the Best Snack (ESL Social Studies)

Introduction

I conducted this lesson the day before election day. As can be seen in the Google Slides below, I built background knowledge for election day and built an understanding of the relevance of the lesson. The class then had a fun activity by electing the best snack which tangibly shows the concept of voting. Before the vote was taken, students debate for their chosen snack. This affords another opportunity to discuss political debates and good practices for effective, amicable debates. Overall, election day is like a holiday in social studies classrooms, and this activity helps to create a festive, fun spirit during this time.
